Volunteer with us and Live Longer!
The University of Michigan Survey
Research Center conducted a 10-year study to determine the
impact of social relationships on health. More than 2,700
people were observed. The
study found that regular volunteer work, more than
any other activity, dramatically increased life expectancy. The
findings were especially significant for men, who were found
to live longer if they volunteered at least once a week. Further
research at Yale, the University of California, John Hopkins,
the National Institute of Mental Health and Ohio State supports
the findings: People who do things for others feel useful,
productive and good about themselves.

At ReUseIt Center,
our teams of volunteers work together to run the center alongside
our staff. The tasks may differ from one volunteer to another
but, at the end of the shift, our volunteers feel rewarded
in that they were part of the whole effort to run the store
that day.
Volunteer activities include picking up donated materials,
unloading materials and receiving them at the center to sitting
at a computer and inputting data into databases and creating
retail pricing signage in MS Word or by hand.
ReUseIt Center is open year-round and most of the activities
take place indoors. Exceptions include activities that involve
picking up materials in the greater community, sweeping the
exterior of the building and the very occasional gardening needed for our outdoor pots and boxed shrub area.
Typical workday activities include cleaning items donated
for display; organizing/sorting items for display; disassembling/reassembling
plumbing or light fixtures; answering phones; general clerical work;
greeting and assisting customers; running the cash register,
etc.
Most activities occur at ReUseIt Center, 1530 Hubbard Avenue,
Batavia. Exceptions are when volunteers participate in deconstructions at offsite residences/businesses, organizing
special events, picking up materials or distributing flyers
or other promotional material in the area.
There is no special training. We work with all who are willing
to provide us their time and talents. We try to meet the needs
of our volunteers and fit their talents to the work that needs
to done. And, above all, we hope to
enjoy ourselves, make new friends, and have fun in
the process!
